Quick answer

Choose the setting for your priorities

Private can describe a guide, an outing, a transfer or a whole program. It does not automatically mean a private lodge, empty trails or exclusive reserve access. Request a service-by-service proposal, then compare the location, group arrangements and choices the provider can actually confirm.

Tena and Misahuallí

Compare a town base with a lodge beyond it, then define which outings and onward transfers are private. A road-access setting does not establish exclusive guiding or flexible activities. Ask the provider to connect its exact property location with your interests and the services offered to your party.

Cuyabeno

Canoe travel, flooded forest and lagoon settings shape the regional experience. Ask whether the guiding, boat arrangements and individual outings are private or shared. Keep those questions separate from access to the reserve: a private booking does not make the surrounding landscape exclusive to your group.

Yasuní and the Napo corridor

Confirm the property’s exact location before comparing private programs. A lodge in the Napo corridor is not automatically inside the national park. Ask about the guiding arrangement, river transfers and shared facilities at that specific base, rather than assuming the region name defines the service.

Puyo and the Pastaza gateway

Compare a city base with accommodation farther into the region. Botanical outings, forest activities and invited host visits need their own location and service details. If your group wants a tailored program, ask which guiding and transport arrangements the provider can confirm for each proposed visit.

Practical decisions

Six details that define a private program

Replace the broad private-tour label with precise service arrangements and a clear written itinerary.

01

Define each private service

Begin with the services you want for your own party: a dedicated guide, an outing or a transfer. Ask the provider to identify each one separately. Accommodation facilities and public settings may still be shared. A precise definition lets you compare the attention and arrangements offered without treating a private-tour label as exclusive use of the whole destination.

  • Is my guide and activity group strictly private, or will I share them with other travelers?
  • Which public settings and property facilities remain shared even when the booked services are private?
  • Where do the included services begin, and which earlier or later journeys do we arrange separately?
02

Confirm the guide arrangement

Ask how the guide’s time is organized across your stay and each activity. Describe your interests and preferred language, then compare the relevant experience and group arrangements. Confirm whether the guide stays with your party for the agreed outings and how any changes are handled. Private guiding needs a clear scope rather than a general statement about personal attention.

  • Will my guide lead only our group, or will they split time with other visitors during the trip?
  • Which outings are for our party alone, and which would include other travelers?
  • Can we customize activity hours beyond the standard package days offered by the provider?
03

Mark the transfer boundaries

Map the complete journey from your starting point to the property and back to the final drop-off. Mark each private, shared and independently arranged segment. Compare meeting points, luggage handling and any additional payments. A dedicated transfer on one part of the journey does not establish that the rest is private or included in the same booking.

  • Does the quoted price cover the road transfer to the Napo base, or only local boat trips?
  • Is the final transfer from the reserve to the city included, or must I book it separately?
  • What meeting points and arrival arrangements apply to each confirmed transport segment?

Agree on pace and interests

Explain the pace and interests that matter to your group before accepting a program. Ask which adjustments the provider can confirm at the actual property and which need advance arrangement. More time for observation, a shorter walk or an omitted activity can change guiding and transport needs. Record the agreed choices rather than assuming everything can be changed during the stay.

  • Can we adjust the daily pace to match my interest in birding rather than rushing through sites?
  • What options can you confirm if someone skips an outing, and who accompanies them?
  • Which adjustments require a separate guide, transport arrangement or additional payment?
05

Check what is shared

The property and the guiding arrangement answer different questions. Confirm the exact location, rooms, dining and other shared facilities even when activities are private. Read the regional guide alongside the proposal so you understand the setting. If a host visit is offered, confirm it is invited and arranged; private booking does not establish access to someone else’s home or community.

  • Is the lodge located inside the national park boundaries, or is it in a nearby community area?
  • Are dining rooms and bathrooms shared with other guests despite having a private guide assigned?
  • If a host visit is offered, has it been invited and arranged for this program?
06

Keep one written proposal

Bring the private and shared services into one written quote for the same dates and group. Identify the nights, rooms, meals, equipment, transport and exclusions. Ask who operates the stay and handles changes. Keep the agreed customization with the final itinerary so that the provider’s written proposal reflects the services you compared and the purpose of your private booking.

  • Can you provide a written quote specifying exactly which activities are included versus optional extras?
  • What is the policy for modifying the itinerary if weather or interest shifts during our stay?
  • What actual dates, accommodation nights and service boundaries are included in this quote?

Decide what privacy needs to mean for you

Tell the provider whether your priority is a dedicated guide, time for photography, a slower pace, a particular language or separate transport. Rank those preferences so you can compare proposals that offer different combinations. Ask what is shared at the accommodation and what happens when your activities overlap with other visitors. A private booking cannot make the whole forest exclusive.

Compare the complete service, not the label

Request a private and a shared version for the same route, dates, group and room arrangement. Compare guiding hours, maximum activity group size, transfers, meals, equipment and exclusions. Mark which choices need advance agreement or additional payment. If customization matters, ask for the specific changes in writing rather than accepting a general promise that the program can be adapted.

Your questions

Before you choose

Does private mean we have the entire lodge?

No. A private program can still use shared accommodation facilities, meals or transport. Ask whether the booking includes exclusive property use or only specific services for your group. Public trails, river settings and reserves may be used by other visitors regardless of your booking.

Can we choose any activity we want?

Only the provider can confirm the activities and adjustments available for your location and dates. Discuss your priorities, relevant requirements and any additional cost before booking. A dedicated guide does not establish unlimited access, flexible operating hours or availability of every activity mentioned in a brochure.

Are private transfers always included?

No. Identify every segment between your starting point, meeting place, accommodation and final drop-off. Ask which are private, which are shared and which you organize separately. Compare the actual transfer arrangements with the itinerary instead of assuming the private-tour label covers the complete journey.

How should we choose the guide?

Describe your interests and preferred language. Ask about relevant experience, the guiding arrangement for each outing and who handles changes during the stay. If specialist or private guiding is important, confirm availability for your dates and whether the quote includes all the hours you expect.

Does a private tour improve wildlife sightings?

No arrangement can guarantee sightings. Private guiding may suit your pace and interests if the provider can confirm it, but wildlife observation still depends on the setting and the outing. Avoid programs that promise particular animals or involve feeding or handling wildlife.

What should be written in the final quote?

Include the exact property, nights, guide services, activity group arrangements, transport, meals, equipment, exclusions and complete price for your group. Record who operates the stay, who receives payment and the change terms. Keep the agreed customization with the itinerary rather than in an informal description.
